Apply for this role

Our community includes developers, designers, product managers, and people who don’t fit neatly into a job title. What connects them is that they’re making things, increasingly in code, and care about making them well.

We need someone who builds real relationships and makes things happen: a meetup that people return to, a thoughtful dinner, a welcoming Discord, a reply that gets someone unstuck.

You’ll also learn our products deeply enough to teach them. Show a workflow in a short video, write a useful post, answer a question on social, and bring the hard problems back to us. You’ll work directly with Paul, a longtime developer-relations practitioner.

What you’ll own

  • Create and run meetups, dinners, workshops, and other gatherings, including the invitations, logistics, hosting, and follow-through.
  • Launch our Discord community and nurture it into a place where members help each other and want to return.
  • Be present on social: join conversations, answer product questions with practical guidance, and connect people.
  • Use Impeccable and Impeccable PRs in real projects so your guidance comes from experience.
  • Make short videos, demos, posts, and tutorials that help people discover what they can build.
  • Turn recurring questions and real friction into clear feedback for the product team. Care about participation and useful outcomes as much as reach.

What we’re looking for

  • You’ve brought people together and kept a community alive beyond its first event. Community building is essential.
  • You can set community priorities, run programs independently, and use participation and feedback to decide what to change. You bring senior-level experience in community building, even if you’re still developing your advocacy skills.
  • You follow through: people get replies, venues get booked, and good conversations turn into lasting relationships.
  • You’re a clear, generous communicator who can meet developers, designers, and PMs where they are.
  • You’re comfortable learning tools in a real codebase, trying things yourself, and saying when you need to investigate an answer.
  • You’re willing to demonstrate the products publicly and grow your video and teaching skills.

A renaissance geek, in practice

  • You bring senior-level judgment and a track record of owning work from an ambiguous problem through a shipped result. You set priorities, make sound tradeoffs, and know when to involve others.
  • You have deep expertise in something and curiosity that extends well beyond it.
  • You see what needs doing, exercise judgment, and follow through without waiting for a perfectly defined brief.
  • You already use AI tools in your work, question their output, and stay responsible for the result.

Useful experience, not prerequisites

  • A body of useful demos, writing, videos, talks, or workshops.
  • Experience nurturing an open-source, creative-tool, or developer-tool community.

Working here

We strongly prefer building together in San Francisco. We may make an exception for an exceptional person based elsewhere in the US. Tell us where you are and whether you’d consider relocating.

Travel: Be available for at least 2–3 trips per month as needed for events, community gatherings, and partners.

The salary range is annual US base pay in USD. Equity is a total initial grant, expressed as fully diluted ownership at grant, subject to vesting and future dilution. We use the same pay bands across the US, including approved remote exceptions. Scope, experience, and demonstrated impact determine placement within the band. We’ll discuss the package and the scope of your role at the beginning of the process.

  • Ownership of a meaningful part of the product or community, with direct access to the people building it.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Flexible time off. Put care into the work, and take the time you need to rest.

How we hire

Plan for about four hours across the process after applying. We aim to complete it within one or two weeks, working around your availability.

  1. Meet Paul

    20 minutes

Talk about the work, your interests, compensation, location, and travel. Bring your questions. We both decide whether to continue before you do an exercise.

  2. Show us how you work

    2 hours maximum

A small, unpaid exercise relevant to the role, with a screen recording of your task workspace. Use AI, your usual tools, libraries, and documentation. The time limit includes your submission and a short explanation of your decisions. Stop at two hours; a thoughtful, incomplete result is welcome.

  3. Work through it together

    60 minutes

Review the same submission with us, discuss your choices, and make a small improvement together. We want to see how we exchange feedback, handle a new constraint, and collaborate.

  4. Make a mutual decision

    30 minutes

Have a final conversation with the team, discuss working expectations, and ask any remaining questions. If we both want to move forward, we’ll arrange references with your permission before an offer.

What we look for: Your judgment, craft, priorities, and how you check your work. We’ll share the evaluation criteria with the brief. For this role, we look for community judgment, useful guidance, and clear communication with developers, designers, PMs, and other builders. We’ll tailor the exercise to the scope we discuss with you.

The exercise is a standalone assessment; we won’t use your submission commercially. It replaces other technical tests, and everyone who completes it gets brief, substantive feedback. Any longer trial or actual project work would be paid.

About the recording and your tools

AI is welcome. We care about the decisions you make and the quality of the result, including how you evaluate and improve generated work.

Record only your task workspace. No webcam or continuous narration is required. You can pause and remove accidentally captured personal information. Before you start, we’ll explain who can access the recording and when it will be deleted. If recording or the format creates a barrier, tell us and we’ll arrange an equivalent alternative.

Show us your work.

Tell us about a community or gathering you built, what you personally did, and what made people come back. Include something you’ve made or explained. If community and advocacy are different strengths for you, say so: we’re open to two complementary hires rather than expecting one person to be equally seasoned at everything.

Tell us how you set direction when the brief was incomplete. Include a few words about yourself, your location, and your compensation expectations. A resume, portfolio, or thoughtful account of your work all help.

One quick human check, since the bots found me too: start your email with the word Ultramarine, so I know a person actually read this.
