Design Advocate

Community Full-time San Francisco or Remote
Apply for this role

Impeccable hit 40,000 stars before I’d written a word of marketing. The community got it there, not me, and they deserve someone whose whole job is them. Right now that’s nobody. I want it to be you.

You’ll show people how to get genuinely excellent work out of their tools, and carry their hardest problems back to me.

What you’d actually own

  • The voice and ears of the Impeccable community, and being one of them.
  • A real, public point of view on design quality and slop. You call it out loudly and specifically.
  • The craft-first culture around what we build, set by how you show up.
  • The usual
    • Make the videos, tutorials, demos, and writing that show what amplified craft looks like, not just tell.
    • Show up where builders are: social, meetups, conferences, the talks nobody else wants to give.
    • Turn what you hear from the community into signal I can act on.
    • Build real relationships across the design and builder world.
    • Carry the Renaissance Geek voice. Editorial and opinionated, never hype.

What I’m looking for

  • You already use AI agents and workflows in your day-to-day work. Today, not eventually.
  • You haven’t cognitively surrendered to it, though. You delegate to AI when it makes sense, but you think for yourself and stay responsible for everything you ship.
  • Extreme agency. You’re a self-starter, and you treat every problem as everyone’s problem.
  • You’re a designer yourself, with the taste to back up your opinions.
  • You’re technical enough to hold your own with engineers and demo in a real dev workflow, not just slides.
  • You’re a sharp communicator, just as comfortable on camera as on the page.
  • You get a genuine kick out of making things for an audience and bringing people together.

Bonus points

  • An existing audience or body of work: writing, talks, or open source.
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding agents and design tooling.

What I offer

  • Competitive pay for an early-stage startup, plus meaningful equity. It’s early, and you’ll own a real piece of what we build together.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision.
  • In-person in San Francisco preferred, with remote open for the right person.
  • Flexible time off. Put in the work, and take the time you need to rest.

How I hire

  1. 1A first call with me (I’m Paul) to see if there’s a real fit, both ways.
  2. 2A deep-dive on your experience and how you think.
  3. 3A paid work sample or working session on a real problem, so we both see how you work under real conditions. No free spec work.
  4. 4One more conversation to ask me anything, then references and an offer.

Sound like you?

Send me your resume, portfolio, or whatever best shows your work. I read everything.

One quick human check, since the bots found me too: start your email with the word Ultramarine, so I know a person actually read this.
